I swear, i only went out to the market to get food for the week; i hadn’t intended to go into the cookware store
….somehow i found myself walking past the bins with assorted tea-towels and other kitchen bits ‘n pieces, through the doors that lead into the den of iniquity!

Recently my mother was told she was sick and she started to ‘get her affairs in order’ so to speak. For my mother this meant leaving her more sentimentally valued possessions to family members. We were talking on the phone (she lives in another state) and she was telling me that she is leaving her cookbooks in a box for me. This didn’t surprise me as i’m the only daughter and my mother has views about ‘woman’s work’ that is very traditionally role stereotyped. When my mother spoke about the ‘recipe books’ she wasn’t referring to the commercially published cookbooks that comprise my cookbook collection; she has none of those. The only published cookbook my mother owns in a ‘how to cook’ manual. Mum was talking about her hand written recipes in an old green twine bound exercise book and another old notebook. Despite my mum’s views about cooking being women’s work I do love to cook and I’m thrilled she’s eventually giving me her recipe books. But the question that begs asking is how are her family recipes going to be passed down through her three son’s family lines? Moreover, i have two daughters and how i do decide who gets my mothers recipe books…and then who gets my handwritten family recipe book that I’ve been compiling over the years since i left home? I think I’ve found the answer so that both of my girls get my recipes in my handwriting.

I’ve always had a hankering to make
cheese! I make the middle eastern cheese
labna..but in reality all you do is drain off yohgurt then
bung in some
garlic cloves and
rosemary and you’re done. I also make my own yoghurt…again that’s no brainer!
But the thought of making cheese both thrills and scares me…don’t know why??? Anyway a year ago i bought a cheese making kit. Due mostly to time restrictions i haven’t made any yet. After buying Rosa Mitchell’s Italian Recipe book and seeing this gorgeous photo i decided the time to make cheese should be now. Well not right this minute, but i’m going to try and aim for this weekend. I’m going to try making ricotta cheese. I’ve got a cheese making book, but it’s not nearly as appealing as Rosa Mitchell’s book is. Her book makes you want to be an Italian Mama and cook everything from scratch and live in the kitchen..haha…Truth be told, we live in an old federation house that has an Italian Mama’s ‘add-on’ kitchen, circa 1970′s, …complete with brown tiled benchtop, brown laminate cupboards and brown tiled floor…it’s a sight to behold LOL okay, i’ve got places to be! talk to you all later, xxx from us in Adelaide xx

This
gorgeous book is the latest one in my ever growing collection of recipe books.
My Cousin Rosa is a delightful book and I can’t wait to cook something from it.
Look at these Yummy meatballs…
This noodle dish with ragu makes me hungry.
I love to make tomato sauce, i didn’t get to make it this past summer because i was busy working as a research assistant.
OMG, i love cannelloni and this looks amazing!

Here’s the
