Die Aphids Die!

I’ve got aphids…as a grower of chillies this is the same as saying my children have headlice…other gardeners run as fast and as far away as possible not unlike parents of children without headlice!  It’s been too hot to use white oil and controlling the aphids by hand has been an epic fail.  I did however discover another avenue of control via Saucy Onion who blogged about her aphid infestation.

January 24 Potted Garden Update

Meet Harriet the Jalopeno chilli.  She came to live with us today.  She’s a mature tree with a fair bit of fruit already growing so she got a sassy looking electric blue pot.  I have big plans for the fruit that Harriet bears.  I’ll be smoking some to make chipotle’s, i’ll be bottling some in oil so i have chilli infused oil to cook with and I’m hoping to make pickles and good some fabulous Mexican dishes with them.  In other chilli news, we have four other bushes full of fruit.  Mr SuziWong was very happy with the flavour and texture of the chillies even though they weren’t overly hot.  He said they had a “bit of bite once you get to the seeds”.

Herb garden roll call ~ latter October

The herb garden is starting to grow fast.  It must be the weekly watering with Seasol and the Seasol Powerfeed!

I’ve got multiple tomatoes growing this year, but it’s the Don Bourke variety/brand that are growing the fastest so far. tomato oct

The great chilli war

Casper had been stealing chilli’s from the tree; i wasn’t impressed to say the least. Growling at him was no use; who could growl at this face??? So in desperation i got a shelf system running out the back now.

The mosaic was coming along well until i cut my thumb. You need to use your thumbs to hold the tiles; so i haven’t been able to get any more done than the picture. hopefully i’ll get some time to be able to do some. My thumb is fine by the way; it took a fair chunk off the tip!

Since that picture of the garden i’ve planted carrots and dwarf beans and two tomatoes. You can’t see the capsicums and sage i planted in the other half wine barrel either. You can see the strawberries on the back fence…they’re sooo juicy and sweet. The worms are doing well, but the heatwave is taking its toll on them. i have to do a daily retrieve of all the worms that head south to the bottom container.

all is well here in really hot Adelaide,
talk soon,
sue

From dried capsicums to capsicum powder.

I’ve been wanting to make chilli pasta for a long time now. I once bought some at a rediculous price because i wanted to see what it tasted like…well it was really yummy!

So now i’m going to make some using the capsicum powder; i’m using that because i don’t want to use hot chilli’s. I bought some flaked dried capsicums and then used my bamix dry mill to make the powder….all ready to go!

Tonight is pasta making night; i’ll be making lasagne sheets and chilli pasta.

Chloe is in Berlin at the moment. She emailed overnight.
She said it’s one of her most favourite places on her travels so far.
We also got a postcard from her;
i’ll take a picture of it because it’s just fabulous.
She’s used water colour postcards
and drawn a wonderful picture of Berlin. It’s stunning.
I’ll be putting that in my journal; it’s a keeper.
I love her art…I still live in hope that oneday she’ll give
me her John Lennon inspired painting…she reckons it
will never happen LOL, but i still have hope hahaha

Taking root

The garden is growing incrdedibly fast. The picture to the left is the second lemon. The petals fell off and now the fruit is staring to grow.
The cherry chilli plant is FULL of fruit. The picture shows the two biggest chillies. It had a mishap this morning. The wind was blowing so hard it blew the plant over. I quickly stuck stakes next to all three of the plants to stabilise them.

Here’s a picture of them standing tall again! I’ve added a few more herbs. At this point in time i’ve got: 2 thai chilli’s; 1 red cherry chilli; 1 oregano, 1 mint, 2 rosemary, 10 rosemary strikings; 30 birdseye chill seedlings; 1 curly leafed parsley and; 1 continental parsley. The myer lemon is still going strong and i’ve added 1 sydney rhubarb and 8 cos lettuces.

I’ve planted the rhubarb in the styrofoam box along with two cos lettuces. The 6 other lettuces are in the long rectangular planter. It’s not very visually appealing
using a styrofoam box, but the crop will be harvested, so it makes sense to use a temporary box. I’ve used terracotta pots for all of the other things like herbs. All, that is, except for the cos lettuce in the rectangular planter.
The worm farms are doing really well even though it took a few days to get an ant problem in one of them under control. I’m thinking of getting 2 more…we eat alot of plant stuff so there’s lots of waste and the worms aren’t keeping up. Plus i’d like to have one farm for just dog poo….yuk i know, but it takes care of the poo problem! Chloe is in Heidelberg, Germany at the moment. I had an email from her the other day saying how historic Germany is and how beautiful. She’s looking forward to coming home and we’re really looking forward to her coming home.
more next time,
sue

Chilli taste/heat results

Well the chilli got eaten and the results are in …….[drum roll please] Nigel says the flavour is really nice “like a real chilli should taste not one of them weird arse ones”….But the heat level is non existant. The label on the pot said that it was an 8/10 and Nigel rated it at 3/10. Even though the chilli isn’t hot we’re still keeping it for flavour. It might do really well in salsa????

Tomatoes; baby lemons, mosaics and chillies

Whilst doing our usual weekly shop at Central Markets i spotted boxes of wonderfully ripe, fresh small tomatoes. I bought two boxes. Each are 10kg and were $10. I got 9 bottles of sauce out of the first box which works out to cost $1.10 each bottle. With the second box i’m going to make: pizzaola sauce; basil sugo pasta sauce and a oregana & basil pasta sauce

I made up some nifty labels for all of the bottled items that i’m making with the tomatoes.

My Myer lemon has had a baby! i’m soooo excited. Now there are two lemons on the tree.

The red cherry chillies are growing at an astounding rate. I’ve got plans for the crop which is prolific: freezing; salsa; and chilli powder. This is the first chilli from the bush since it has matured enough to fruit. Nigel is just about to eat it with dinner; i’ll let you know what he thinks of it since i’m not the chilli eater!!

The mosaic is coming along really well. i got bored doing all the orange trunk so i moved on to the red fruit and green leaves.

Chloe arrived in Munich in the wee hours of last night. She said it was snowing and very beautiful. Chloe will be travelling close to where i was born: Rinteln. It’s a very odd feeling having my daughter travelling close to where i was born! LOL
Will let you all know where she is as she travels.
