Paneer – Indian Cheese

What can I say that would make you happy to make and eat paneer?  Coz, seriously it looks like something the cat chucked up!  Granted it looks awful, but when cooked into a  matar paneer curry it’s fabulous.  If you’re a vegetarian or cooking for vegetarians and are stumped at what to cook, then look no further because once you’ve breezed your way through making paneer you can whip up a matar paneer to serve….I swear you’ll have accrued mega brownie points.

Karti – An Anglo-Indian family Christmas Day

As an Anglo-Indian family we have many blended traditions.  One, is that we don’t do a traditional Anglo-Celtic or English style Christmas feast.  Instead we cook Karti and Prawn Curry as our main course.  We vote on which dessert to make and it can range from an Italian tiramisu to an authentic German Blackforest Cherry cake to anything in between.  This year the family voted for pavlova.  Both dishes take an enourmous amount of preparation time…time that we don’t have during an ordinary week.  Therefore, we only cook these recipes when we’ve got ample time.

Karti rolls, for the uninitiated, are spice and yoghurt marinated rump pieces, rolled up in paratha’s with onion and lemon juice…and with fresh chilli if it takes your fancy.  They take a lot of time and preparation to cook and we tend to only make them once or twice a year.  We adore them…so much that we put our initials on our ‘roll stash’ so that no one gets more than anyone else!  Yes, we are territorial about our food!

Be an Indian chef for a night!

fish curry

This is a really delicious fish curry we recently enjoyed at our favourite Indian restaurant Spice ‘n Ice at Port Adelaide.  Namit Mangal, the owner and one of the talented chefs, makes this amazing curry.  It’s a mild curry and the flavours are to die for.  So, if you thought you could never create restaurant  quality Indian food at home without slaving for hours in the kitchen, you’re wrong.  You’ll have dinner on the table in less than 30 minutes!

Miss 16 becomes Miss 17 & celebrates at Spice ‘n Ice

entre selection

I don’t know about you and your family, but my family love Indian food.  That might be because we are an Anglo-Indian family though!  Our favourite Indian restaurant is Spice ‘n Ice in Port Adelaide.  It is owned and run by Namit Mangal, who also cooks!  The real question is what is it that Namit doesn’t do: he’s amazing!  We first ran into Namit when he used to run Maya Indian restaurant just off Gouger Street.  When he left we followed him to Urban Indian on Henley Beach Road.  Then, Namit left to  open his own busines…a brilliant idea.  My only complaint is he chose Port Adelaide in which to open his business.  Port Adelaide is too far for us to drive for our weekly Indian fix and since our lives have become increasingly busier we don’t get to go as often as we’d like.  Tonight, we celebrated Miss 16′s 17th birthday at Spice ‘n Ice and as always it was worth the drive to Port Adelaide.  Clockwise from left our entre’s were, vegetable samosa, prawn kawali, onion pakora and chicken tikka.  They were all delicious; as usual.

Sausage Mania Continued

Out of the batch of 2kg of pork there have been many meals from the sausages that were made. After tonight’s curry there are only about 6 left; enough to make 12 sausage rolls. We’ve really enjoyed the sausages so i might need to make some more this weekend.

Sausage Mania – Indian Spicy Sausages

These are hog casings preserved in salt and stored in the fridge. Yes, they are a bit tangly but somehow we manage to get them untangled each time we need to use them.
